Dar es Salaam, December 17, 2012 Darling Tanzania is today supporting the first phase of the Wamama Na Maendeleo (WANAMA) initiative where over 300 women from the Kipawa Ward are given entrepreneurship education. Apart from a financial contribution of Tshs. 5m/- in facilitating the training, Darling Tanzania will select 5 women registered with WANAMA and give them the opportunity to become micro-distributors of Darling products. This initiative by Darling forms part of the organization’s corporate social responsibility. Operating since 1997,
Darling proudly leads in this growing market as the manufacturer of high quality hair additions.

The Darling brand services the largest and most important consumer group: women. This initiative provides an important platform for Darling to give back to the market segment that it serves. Like in other parts of the world, women in Tanzania are part of the most vulnerable group of people and this vulnerability is directly related to poverty thus pushing for the need to address their plight. The event which was inaugurated by Hon. Milton Makongoro Mahanga, Deputy Minister for Labor was a full-day event held at the Ukonga Army Barracks in Dar es Salaam.

“It is encouraging to see so many women eager to learn something. You are an example to young people who still have the misconception that they cannot do anything to employ themselves but must wait for the government to knock on their doors and offer them jobs. Entrepreneurship requires initiative and drive and through your effort to employ yourselves, you will also be creating employment for and empowering others,” said Hon. Mahanga.

WANAMA is a women-specific project initiated to address gender inequalities in the small enterprise sector in the Kipawa community under the leadership of Ms. Bonna M. Kaluwa, the Kipawa Ward Councilor. The initiative combines gender equality promotion with enterprise development for women.

“Darling Tanzania is committed to empowering women. Women of all ages are the main consumers of our goods and therefore it is important to us to participate in empowering them and contributing to their effort to improve their own and their families’ livelihood,” said DARLING Tanzania Managing Director, Mr. Hussein Hamadi.
Darling Tanzania will continue to support WANAMA by enabling and empowering groups of 5 women each year to become micro-distributors of its products as an extension of its support to the plight of women in poverty.
